Stoddard County was organized Jan. 2, 1835, from New Madrid County and named for Amos Stoddard, first American Civil Commandant of Upper Louisiana. Puxico was named for a Shawnee chief.

Puxico gets roughly 48 inches of rain per year and 9 inches of snowfall. On average, there are 216 sunny days per year in our community. The July high is around 91 degrees, and the January low is 23.

Puxico boasts its own public school system with elementary, middle and high schools, as well as a technical high school. Southeast Missouri State University is in Cape Girardeau only 42 miles away. Six other academies of higher learning are located less than 2 hours away from our town.

We are home to our own public library. Three hospitals and medical centers are within a half-hour radius of Puxico. An Amtrak station is located in Poplar Bluff.

Lake Wappapello State Park offers a variety of recreation opportunities ranging from an exciting day on Lake Wappapello to a quiet stroll through the Ozark forest. Cast your line in hopes of reducing the excellent population of white bass, crappie and bluegill, as well as largemouth bass and catfish. Enjoy swimming, boating and waterskiing. The park features a swimming beach, paved boat ramps, miles of trails, two picnic areas and two campgrounds.

Located in the upper end of the lower Mississippi River valley, Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, at 21,676 acres, is the largest remnant of an original 2.5 million acres in the Missouri boot heel. The refuge is a major wintering area for migratory waterfowl. Bald eagles have been successively nesting on the refuge since 1985.

Visit nearby Poplar Bluff with its storied history, various museums and fun attractions. Bluff Falls Water Park & Entertainment Center in Poplar Bluff is a 12-acre facility catering to the young and old alike. Black River Coliseum is a state-of-the-art, 115,000-square-foot structure that plays hosts to concerts, sporting events, trade shows, conventions and banquets, just to name a few. It has a seating capacity of 5,000 for concerts, 4,500 for sporting events and 4,000 for rodeos.
